Two quickies. First, a lot of mutual funds (no-load funds) don't charge any fees. Second, unless you happen to own a seat on the trading floor, you wind up paying a lot of brokerage fees doing all your own trading, and that's not counting the time it takes doing research on those stocks, filling out your taxes, etc. etc. Double that if your trying to do social-responsibility research as well as performance research.
Mutual funds are by far the cheapest way to have a well-balanced, well-managed portfolio.
