- On the night of 31 July 2008, a huge fire started at the Mercado Oriental, the largest market
in Central America. It destroyed 1,500 vendor stalls and caused losses worth millions of
- BANEX was the first financial institution to support the affected vendors. It
announce a series of measures to help them rebuild their stalls, including loan deferments for
monthly periods and up, financing for working capital and rebuilding stalls. BANEX established a
"mobile branch office" in the devastated area and facilitated resources to remove rubble. At
present the vendor stalls in the affected area have been rebuilt.
- Luisa Sánchez, a founding
customer of BANEX, began receiving our financial services 12 years ago. Luisa is 61 years old and
for the past 30 years has been working at the Mercado Oriental where she runs a business of
religious items and imitation jewelry.
- She was able to set up her stall and later to
rebuild it after the fire with financing from BANEX. She has an impressive record as a responsible
customer, a successful woman, well-respected among the other vendors. She is the mother of four
children who have followed her example as a hardworking, responsible person, and they all own
businesses at the Mercado Oriental.
