Barbershops Rebuilding Communities
Barbershops Rebuilding Communities

In December 2007 the Michigan Interfaith Trust Fund closed a loan for just under $70,000 to a woman, Dorothy Harris-Grigsby, located in Highland Park, Michigan, to renovate her barber shop and hair salon. Shep’s Beauty and Barber Shop has been a mainstay in Highland Park for nearly 50 years. Dorothy has worked at the shop for more than 26 years and managed it for her uncle for the 12 years prior to his death in 2006.

After his death, Dorothy was able to scrape together funds to purchase the shop from his estate in 2007, but then, turned to MITF to help her provide much needed updates and renovations to the shop. Dorothy has eight employees working in the shop and is committed to investing in Highland Park, which has struggled over the years following the exodus of the Chrysler Motor Corporation as well as other large employers. It is MITF’s hope that her reinvestment in Highland Park will encourage others to do the same.
