At the time when he applied for his first loan from the Khachmaz branch of CredAgro in the Spring of 2002, he owned just 0.42 ha (1 acre) of land and a small poultry farming business. The first loan granted to Maharram by CredAgro worth $2,000 was used to grow seedlings on his land and start a fruit tree orchard. He was able to efficiently utilize this credit line thanks to knowledge and business skills passed down to him by his father.
With the profits obtained through his new business, he was able to extend the scope of activities on his land by purchasing two cows and increasing the number of chickens. The next loan he received worth $2,000 was used by Maharram to increase the number of apricot and cherry trees on his land. By the time the loan matured, Maharram had a large fruit tree orchard, three cows and 200 chickens.
Given the success of his businesses, he decided to engage in the sale of milk and eggs, and use the proceeds from his new business to make some repairs to his home. Maharram took a third loan worth $3,000 in 2004 in order to increase the size of his orchard to 1 ha (2.5 acres) and construct a barn. By this time, he built up quite a successful private business. The annual volume of sales of seedlings reached 10,000. He furthermore obtained 8 cows and 1 heifer.
In April 2007, he received his fourth loan. The credit worth $10,000 USD was used extend his farm by purchasing an additional lot of 1.88 ha (4.6 acres). His fifth and largest loan of $30,000 was taken to buy 2 ha (5 acres) for a new apricot orchard.
Today, Maharram is the owner of a large and well established business. He possesses 7.32 ha (18 acres) of land with 10,000 apricot trees, has 10 head of cattle and more than 300 chickens. He always says that the things that helped him the most in life were his family, his business and the loans he received from CredAgro. Maharram supports a family of 4 in addition to 4 full-time employees.
