The Benefits of Fair Trade
The Benefits of Fair Trade

Edgar comes from a family of coffee growers. Today, he has a family of his own and a seven-hectare coffee plantation to support them. Working with Coopetarraz˙, a cooperative supported by Oikocredit, means that his beans have been certified fair trade and he receives a premium price for them. The coopĺs sustainability program has taught him new techniques that protect both the environment and his workers. Edgar has been part of the Coopetarraz˙ family all his life. His father was a founding member. As a child, Edgar and his father would walk 23 kilometers to the nearest collection center, with their harvest packed onto the backs of horses. Today, Coopetarraz˙ has a collection center just two kilometers away. Edgarĺs dream for his nine children is that they will continue to run and improve the family business. His two eldest children are already working alongside their father. The others attend schools supported by Coopetarraz˙. A distance-learning high school program supported by Coopetarraz˙ will allow them to complete their basic education and have the possibility to go on to university. Oikocredit supports coffee cooperatives that process and commercialize the coffee production of more than 2,400 farmers. The direct beneficiaries are the 2,445 associates of the cooperative and their families.
