Josephina Lopez is a 57 year old mother of two who obtained a white brick, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home through Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. After separating from her husband Ms. Lopez lived with family and friends. At one point, she lived in a mobile trailer home with no heat or air conditioning. During these trying times Ms. Lopez stayed with one of her friends who happened to own a home made possible through Affordable Homes of South Texas Inc. Her friend encouraged her to submit an application.
Before becoming a home owner Ms. Lopez faced some barriers to homeownership. These obstacles had mostly to do with resolving her credit issues while simultaneously going through legal divorce proceedings. With determination and the guidance of AHSTI's homebuyer counselor Ms. Eunice Gonzales she was able to overcome these obstacles. Ms. Lopez used her income tax refund for the down payment on her home. As of this past year, she became an official homeowner. When asked about her thoughts about being a home owner Ms. Lopez responds simply by saying, "It's a blessing."
"Owning a home is a dream come true," she said. Her life has changed for the better and she enjoys the peace of mind that comes from the stability of owning her own home. Her family continues to make strives to achieve economic independence, her eldest daughter recently graduated from college with a Masters degree in counseling and is headed to Africa to pursue missionary work. Her youngest daughter is currently enrolled in college and is grateful to have a roof over her head as she continues down the path of education. Ms. Lopez added, "the best part of my day is coming home from work and driving up to my own home."
